Purpose of the JA-SIG
- to provide education and research in the applied use of open technology architectures and systems in higher education
- to develop a global academic community of interest among
practitioners and institutions and to inform that community of
international activities, projects, and opportunities in the field of
open technology architectures and systems in higher education
- to educate by coaching, collaborating, and sharing good
practices, and disseminating the results of innovative approaches in
this field
- to create, through its various activities including
conferences, projects, and outreach, an atmosphere of trust, goodwill,
and mutual respect amongst all participants
Activities
The JA-SIG membership is engaged in several activities. The first is the
sponsorship of an annual conference. The conference, having two
technical and one management track, formally held semi-annually is now
a multi-day community source event. A second activity, the JA-SIG Clearinghouse,
is a place on the Web to facilitate the sharing of community source components.
The third JA-SIG activity is the development of a free, open source, open
standard portal for higher education: uPortal.

Unicon's Education IT Consulting Group Collaborates with Johns Hopkins University Staff for uPortal 3 Upgrade
Phoenix, AZ - October 15, 2008 —Unicon, Inc., the leading provider of open source enterprise portals, applications, and top end technology consulting for higher education, today announced the completion of a collaborative project with the IT staff at John's Hopkins University for their upgrade to the latest uPortal 3 open source enterprise portal. As part of the upgrade process, Johns Hopkins University also contracted with Unicon to develop numerous uPortal 3 feature enhancements. Johns Hopkins went live with the uPortal 3 upgrade in August 2008 and contributed the newly developed enhancements back to the open source community.
